A sauna built for slowing down.

Opening soon at Bleyduin, Heemstede · Nederlands

A cosy community sauna by the water in Heemstede, near Haarlem. Heat, rest, and nowhere else to be.

coorie

Pronounced like ‘cookie’ but with an ‘r’-coorie [ku:ri] is a beautiful old Scottish word that means to nestle in, get cozy, and find comfort in togetherness.

To nestle. To lean in close. To feel held.

That's the whole idea. A small hot room for ten or twelve, a cold reset a few steps from the door, a lovely relaxing area afterwards, and people who came for the same reason you did.

The ritual

A session is about one hour and goes round in a circle.

Most people go round three times. cooling temperature follows the seasons

1. Arrive

10 min

Phone in the cabin. Change into your swimwear, bring your towel, land in this welcoming space. Nothing starts until you've stopped.

2. Heat

12 to 15 min

Our sustainable electric stove is heated for your comfort. Water on the stones (Löyly is pronounced roughly as lowloo (or löy-ly) when you want it. Step out when your body is ready for a break, everyone is different.

3. Cold

do what you need

We are doing this very seasonally, a gently cold misting shower in the autumn/winter, the contrast happens amongst the seasonal surroundings.

4. Rest

15 min

Wrap up, tea, sit by the fire or the water. Talk or don't. This part is often underestimated. The benefits can be huge, don’t rush to get back in, enjoy… Then round again…

Notes from the build

Progress on site: For a while now it's felt like I've been stuck behind a computer setting up. A few really positive steps have been made on site. I cleared some of the area (farewell oud kippenhok) where our beautiful sauna will live and built a garden storage box all by myself (very proud). The changing facilities have also been ordered.

Electricity has been extended ready for our lovely electric sauna to be plugged in outdoors. Water supply is next ready for the cooling misting showers and drench bucket

Testing out one of the changing rooms at home. They are nice and roomy!

Coorie Blue Bakfiets, you may see me about Haarlem and Heemstede getting prepped for the sauna opening
